Internet surfers can find several versions of the Ben Carson bio online. The doctor himself also published his bio in the best-selling book Gifted Hands.

Dr. Carson was born in Detroit, MI to a woman who divorced his father when Carson was eight years old. Carson's mother worked two or three jobs in order to provide for Ben and his older brother, Curtis.

Carson's mother pushed him to succeed in school, and he eventually got accepted to Yale University. Carson went on to the University of Michigan medical school where he studied neurosurgery.

When Carson turned 33, he became the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins hospital. With a team of 70 other doctors, Carson successfully separated conjoined twins in 1987 for the first time in history.

Ben Carson DVD Movie Fails to Inspire

ben carson dvd movie

According to USA Today's review of the Ben Carson DVD movie, the production is "dull" and uninspiring.

The movie, Gifted Hands, is the most recent installment in TNT's Spotlight series of films. The made-for-TV movie tells the life and accomplishments of neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson.

USA Today was critical of the performance of Cuba Gooding, Jr., the actor who plays Dr. Carson. Many reviewers have agreed that Gooding was upstaged by the performance of the actress who plays Dr. Carson's mother, Kimberly Elise.

Some film critics have identified the film's focus on Dr. Carson's famous conjoined twins surgery as its problem. The film would have been more inspiring, they say, had it instead focused on Dr. Carson's victory over poverty and other setbacks.

Dr. Ben Carson Operating on Siamese Twins in 1997

dr. ben carson operating on siamese twins

In 1997, the Banda babies were born as conjoined twins in Zambia. Soon, Dr. Ben Carson operating on siamese twins Luka and Banda would save their lives.

The twins were born joined at the top of their heads, though their brains were not connected. The Banda babies were successfully separated by a twenty-doctor surgical team headed by pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson.

Carson rehearsed for the procedure using virtual reality technology that produced a 3-D replica of the babies' brains from Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The surgery took over twenty-eight hours.

The surgery was not without complications. In fact, 19 hours into the procedure, Dr. Carson wanted to stop the surgery because he feared the twins would bleed to death. Because the hospital could not sustain the twins' lives only partially separated, Carson continued and successfully completed the separation.
